our story

Founded in 2022 by a collective of local artists, Source/Filter Music was born out of a desire to create interesting, unique musical projects in Los Angeles that spotlight the works of local, living composers and showcase the incredible talents of local musicians and performing artists.

Since then, Source/Filter has produced concerts featuring seldom-performed works by beloved composers such as Shostakovich as well as entirely new vocal works from Los Angeles-based composers, including Brooke DeRosa and Amy Gordon. Our productions have included singers, instrumentalists, and multi-media aspects such as film.

OUR MISSION

Source/Filter Music seeks to present unique musical experiences that are site-specific, immersive, and cinematic in scope. We aim to feature both  the works of local, living composers as well as unique interpretations of established works. In addition to providing a platform for local artists, we also strive to elevate underrepresented and marginalized voices both onstage and behind the scenes.

OUR VISION

We see a future for music in Los Angeles that is an open and inclusive artistic space, where new musical ideas from creatives of all walks of life can be germinated and brought to life in our vibrant city.

WHY SOURCE/FILTER?
THE MEANING BEHIND THE NAME

Source/Filter Music’s name was inspired by the source/filter model of vocal production, a theory of why each individual voice sounds so unique. In the model, the source (the sound vibrations created by our vocal cords) are shaped, or filtered, by various spaces in our bodies; including the throat and mouth. Source/Filter aims to create a similar effect in taking dynamic music and filtering it through the dynamic talents of our artists and performers to create unique and beautiful works of art.
